DESCRIPTION Introduction to Raku Firing with Obvara This hands-on workshop introduces students to Raku: an ancient Japanese alternative firing technique which involves removing pieces from a kiln while still hot and placing them in combustible materials to starve the piece of oxygen. This interactive and communal process creates one of a kind, decorative ceramic art. Obvara raku is a decorative firing teaching that combines elements of traditional raku and include immersing your heated bisque firied pieces in a fermented mixture of flour, water, yeast, and sugar. This process creates unique, organic-looking patterns and colors on the pottery's surface, often resembling aged leather or bark.  Participants should make and bring 2 ceramic pieces that have been bisque fired. Or you may purchase vases from us for $20/piece. Only Raku clay and Raku glaze should be used to make pieces.
