This beautifully beaded Victorian-era bag was created most likely by an Iroquois artisan in the late 1800s. This Niagara-style beadwork from the eastern Great Lakes region is made of red cotton with a red silk lining. The gorgeous, raised glass beadwork is hand sewn with thread. The wrist strap is also made of threaded glass beads. The bag opens and is lined with silk. Gorgeous! This type of "cross-cultural art," using native beading styles and European fabrics and designs, was created by the Iroquois and others in the region to appeal to the busy tourist trade of the time.Dimensions: 5 1/4"wide x 4" high x 1" deepstrap is 9 1/2" around and beaded dangle loops hang 1"Condition - from a collector - beadwork is largely intact, but cotton fabric is deteriorating around stitching and silk lining is faded.GM42
