This intricately beaded pincushion is an antique from the early 1900s. Likely Iroquois or other eastern Great Lakes region. This Mohawk-style beadwork is made of red velvet in the shape of a heart with a green silk back. The glass beads are hand sewn with thread. This type of "cross-cultural art," using native beading styles and European fabrics and designs, was created by the Iroquois to appeal to the busy tourist trade of the time. Items were often beaded with the name of a destination such as a city or a fair-in this case, Montreal.Approximately 6” wide, 5 1/2" longCondition - from a collector - excellent condition for age, beadwork intact, small hole and some staining on reverse sideGM37
