Fluorite, a mineral made of calcium fluoride (CaF2), often forms in cubic crystals due to the way its atoms are arranged in a crystal lattice. This arrangement is known as the cubic crystal system, which is one of the seven crystal systems in mineralogy. In the cubic crystal system, atoms, ions, or molecules are packed into a cube-shaped lattice. Each fluorite molecule is at the center of a cube, with calcium ions surrounded by eight fluoride ions at the corners. This symmetrical arrangement allows the mineral to grow in shapes that reflect the internal symmetry of the lattice, hence the common cubic form of fluorite crystals.
