Calcite has unique optical properties; it exhibits double refraction, meaning it splits light rays into two paths, creating a double image of any object viewed through it. When exposed to UV light, some calcite varieties can fluoresce, emitting visible light in various colors, including blue, red, pink, or white. This fluorescence under UV light is due to the presence of certain impurities within the calcite, such as organic material or rare earth elements, which absorb UV light and then re-emit it at a different wavelength, producing the visible glow.
