The Lasse Hat was first knit for Baby Fritz, and is named after Lasse in “Children of the Northlights” by Ingri and Edgar Parin D’Aulaire. Fritz will be the fourth generation to love this book. Lasse was knit so that Fritz could start early with his adventuring outdoors in the winter.Lasse is knit in the round, with a triple-thick brim to keep Fritzie extra warm. The colorwork is modern, yet traditional, and has little heart shapes in the geometric pattern, to remind him how much he is loved. The earflaps are knit separately, and sewn on by hand. The pompoms are optional. I honestly can’t decide which way I like this hat best. I love the traditional square shape of this hat without the pompoms and I love the way the pompoms weigh down the corners and jingle with every small movement. It’s a happy hat either way, and you can decide which version is happiest for your little one. It’s adorable either way.
