This is a mounted purple fluorite specimen from well known Berbes, Spain. This is a distinctive, aesthetic example of soft purple fluorite, with just a hint of pink, on matrix with sharp raw blades of golden cream barite. The fluorite has a soft matte texture, with light etching and varying levels of perfection and completion. The crystals are, for the most part, clean and well-formed. The fluorite is a super deep tone, dark purple, which looks nearly black at times and is best seen backlit (as seen here). This is a very large and heavy plate, but it has been hot-glue mounted on a thin acrylic base for display so it may display upright. This distinctive cluster wows with its classic composition, crystallization, and appealing colors. This large cabinet specimen is truly striking, and would offer a lot of beauty to any specimen collection. Berbes is a mining area in the province of Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain—it is famous for its violet and blue-purple fluorite cubic crystals, and associations with quartz and barite. Since the 1930s the area has been mined by competing entrepreneurs and companies to extract fluorspar and fluorite specimens, and it has seen the collapse of both companies and physical mine shafts.
