This used to be known as Washing Soda, an 'old-fashioned' material your great grandmother possibly used. It's also used in ceramics where it's known as "Soda Ash" and "Soda Crystals". Don't confuse this with Sodium Bi-Carbonate (baking soda). This is an alkaline material and is also hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air). We bought it to neutralize residual muriatic acid and oxalic acid that I was using to clean some mineral and rock specimens. I also tried baking soda but had better luck with this....(see more)
