Clays that are resistant to deforming and melting at high temperatures earn the name of "fireclay". It increases refractoriness when used in clay body recipes. This is a versatile clay, with a wide firing range making it very useful as both a fireclay and stoneware clay. It is more often used as the core component around which clay bodies are built to suit the properties needed by the individual potter or sculptor.
