This hard, glossy wax comes from castor oil which comes from the Castor bean. By hydrogenation (a reaction with pure hydrogen) it becomes a saturated wax, a solid at room temperatures. It's a comparatively less known vegetable wax; carnauba being the most well known. Nevertheless it has several properties and uses including a less expensive and possibly better ingredient for encaustic "hot wax" painting. But it can also be used as a low percentage additive in "cold wax" oil painting. It replaces all or part of the damar resin used for encaustic. Although it is considered a hard wax with very high gloss when polished, castor wax is not as hard as carnauba....(see more)
