One of the properties of commercial alginate is how fast it sets up. For life casting this works out OK as long as it's not *too* fast. Warm weather can throw a monkey wrench into the works though. If the ambient temps are in the mid 80's on upward, alginate can set-up while you're still mixing it (and that's if you only allow 1.5 minutes for mixing). It's a non-reversible reaction termed "thermoset", which is a reaction between 2 component chemicals which react to give you a solid, gel, or an elastomer. You do have some control of it but the only real factor is how warm the components are when mixing is begun. Heat speeds it up....(see more)
