Vesuvianite was initially found in a volcanic block adjacent to Mount Vesuvius, hence its name. This mineral forms as a result of contact metamorphism, where incredibly hot fluids mix with the host rock and create new minerals. Vesuvianite can occur in a variety of different colors; however, the jade-like green version is known as "Californite" or "Californian Jade". Our powdered material consists of mostly silt and clay sized particles. Our powders do have a slight grit to them. Please see the corresponding sediment size chart.  Mineral Properties Mohs’s Hardness: 6 - 7 Specific Gravity (g/cm3): 3.25 - 3.50 Luster: Dull Color: Green Origin: California, United States This product is not man-made, mixed with resin, dyed, or stabilized. Pictures are taken in full sun and material is dry. Size measurements are using the metric system (millimeters).
