Shungite is a black, carbon-rich rock composed of nearly 98% carbon, giving it a sooty texture when crushed. Technically, shungite is a mineraloid, similar to amber, opal, or obsidian (volcanic glass), as it lacks a distinct crystalline structure. The majority of shungite deposits are located in the Karelia region of Russia. Our medium material is considered to be sand sized (very coarse sand to fine sand), ranging between 2 millimeters to 0.25 millimeters. Please see the corresponding sediment size chart.  Mineral Properties Mohs’s Hardness: 3.5 - 4 Specific Gravity (g/cm3): 2.20 Luster: Dull Color: Matte Black Origin: Russia This product is not man-made, mixed with resin, dyed, or stabilized. Pictures are taken in full sun and material is dry. Size measurements are using the metric system (millimeters), including the metric ruler (cm/mm) as shown in the product photos.
