Shungite is a black, carbon-rich rock composed of nearly 98% carbon, giving it a sooty texture when crushed. Technically, shungite is a mineraloid, similar to amber, opal, or obsidian (volcanic glass), as it lacks a distinct crystalline structure. The majority of shungite deposits are located in the Karelia region of Russia. Our coarse material is considered to be pea- sized gravel, ranging between 4 millimeters to 2 millimeters. Please see the corresponding sediment size chart.  Mineral Properties Mohs’s Hardness: 3.5 - 4 Specific Gravity (g/cm3): 2.20 Luster: Dull Color: Matte Black Origin: Russia This product is not man-made, mixed with resin, dyed, or stabilized. Pictures are taken in full sun and material is dry. Size measurements are using the metric system (millimeters), including the metric ruler (cm/mm) as shown in the product photos.
