Lithops karasmontana var. lateritia 'Top Red'
Lithops karasmontana var. lateritia is a petite succulent comprised of small, immensely fleshy leaves designed to resemble the stony landscape of their South African homeland. As is the case with most mesembs, or mimicry succulents, a majority of the plant lives underground, where the long taproot stores ample water and nutrients to support growth amidst drought conditions. The pairs of leaves feature a soft toupe-colored hue, offset by deeper rust red accents around the ‘windows’ covering the leaves’ flattened upper surface – thus allowing light to reach deep into Lithops karasmontana var. lateritia. As such, plenty of bright sun will allow the plant to thrive while also encouraging large yellow blooms to appear during the summer months. Like other varieties of Lithops, this specimen can be tricky when it comes to water – be sure to provide thorough but infrequent drinks during the spring and fall, ceasing to water entirely during the summer and winter. Extremely porous soil within a well-draining pot will further shield against issues such as rot, as will ample airflow around the leaves and soil surface. The blooms and old leaves will begin to fade and shrivel at the end of the fall season, cueing you to stop watering until the weather warms once again in the spring. Until then, be sure to shield Lithops karasmontana var. lateritia from freezing temperatures, which could otherwise damage the very water-rich leaves. NOTE: Every 2" pot contains 1 lithop. Every 2.5" pot may contain 1-3 individual lithops depending on current availability. ***This plant is not available for wholesale***
