Authentic Pre-Columbian "Smiling Man" or "Laughing Man" Veracruz artifact. This stunning artifact dates circa 6th to 9th Century. This Sonriente-style figurine (smiling face) displays smiling mouth with e heart-shaped visage with a raised brow, a pair of narrowed almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, prominent cheeks, and a bowed lip smile, with parted lips exposing teeth, as though mid-laugh. This jovial child wears a square headdress that flares at the top and is incised with three decorative motifs, one centered and the other two on each side. Piece measures approx. 6.25" Wide by 6" in Height - head is fragment from larger statue. 7.5" H (19 cm) on included custom stand. Some believe these "Smiling or Laughing Pieces" can be read as expressions of Mesoamerican humor, possibly associated with a god of joy and dance, but there are hints of a more sinister meaning.
