The 34th Infantry Division was the first American division deployed to Europe in WWII. Soon after the unit arrived by Troop Ship at Belfast, Northern Ireland, its commanding officer, Major General Russell P. Hartle, was tasked with organizing an American version of the British Commandos, the elite group of small 'hit and run' forces that the Brits had successfully employed behind German lines. Captain William Orlando Darby was promoted to lead the new unit and asked for volunteers. Of the 500 newly designated U.S. Army Rangers as they were designated, 281 came from the 34th Infantry Division! From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
