
U.S. Army 2nd Armored Division shoulder sleeve insignia
The 2nd Armored Division was formed at Fort Benning, Georgia on July 15, 1940, with Colonel George S. Patton, Jr. in charge of training. Later that same year, a recently promoted Brigadier General Patton assumed command of the division for the first time. Under subsequent commanders, the 2nd Armored Division landed at Omaha Beach on June 9, 1944, three days after the initial Normandy landings. The division saw heavy combat against German forces throughout the War including in the Battle of the Bulge. In July 1945, the 2nd Armored Division was the first American division to enter Berlin, the German capital. During World War II, the 2nd Armored Division took 94,151 POWs, liberated 22,538 Allied POWs, shot down or damaged on the ground 266 enemy aircraft and destroyed or captured uncountable thousands of enemy tanks and other equipment and supplies.
