Georges Seurat (French) 1884 This study by Seurat serves as the final preparation for his monumental painting depicting Parisians leisurely enjoying an island on the Seine (currently housed in the Art Institute of Chicago). In this study, Seurat employs contrasting pigments, skillfully interweaving them through small, patchy brushstrokes. However, in the mural-sized park scene that debuted two years later at the 1886 Impressionist exhibition, Seurat adopted a different technique known as Pointillism. Using tight, dot-like dabs of paint, he created a visual effect where the colors blend harmoniously when observed from a distance.
