Study for "Portrait of an Indian"
Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson (French) ca. 1807 This highly detailed oil sketch served as the modello, or preliminary study, for a portrait that now resides in the Musée Girodet at Montargis. The larger canvas, sold at the posthumous auction of Girodet's studio, was mistakenly catalogued as "Portrait of an Indian" and dated 1807. However, upon closer examination, it is clear that the costume depicted is Ottoman, not Indian. Girodet, a talented painter who trained under Jacques-Louis David, was known for his distinctive style characterized by literary elegance, imaginative visual effects, and a penchant for exotic subjects and settings. After his return to Paris in 1795 from the French Academy in Rome, Girodet developed a unique artistic approach that captivated viewers with its imaginative and alluring qualities.
