Sony Playstation Sony released the original Playstation (seen here) in December 1994 in Japan and September 1995 in North America. It was a fifth-generation home console, and faced fierce competition from Nintendo 64 and SEGA Saturn. The console sold for a price of $299, and proved to be popular with it's huge game library. In total, 3061 games were produced for the Playstation, with a total of 967 million units sold between all games!
