Van Gogh painted this self-portrait when he had been in Paris for almost two years. He studied the pointillist technique and applies it in an original way. He places short strips of paint in different directions. Around his head, they form a kind of halo. The painting is one of Van Gogh's boldest experiments in Paris. He places complementary colors side by side using long brush strokes: blue and orange in the background, and red and green in the beard and eyes. The colors intensify each other.
