Born in Laval in a poor family, Henri Rousseau enlisted in the army. He then goes to Paris and dreams of becoming a painter. But, to earn a living, he will exercise another trade until 1893. He charges taxes on goods entering Paris, as was done at the time. This earned him the nickname "customs officer" ("douanier" in French).
