Amazon societies circa the second and third millennia were egalitarian, democratic, and generally peaceable – all the qualities you’d hope for in a dinner guest. Taken from Judy Chicago’s ‘The Dinner Party’, this design features detailed decorative patterns of the Amazons: a white egg, red crescent, and black stone which join to form a mythical warrior woman. They are accompanied by metallic breastplates, worn by Amazons in battle. While upraised double axes – or ‘labyris’ – used in felling trees, clearing land, and in worshipping the Goddess adorn the sides.
