Ancient Mayans called cacao "Food of the Gods".  Mayan history has uncovered many uses; In ceremonies to honor Gods, as a special drink using fermented roasted cocoa beans flavored with chili powder as a form of currency for luxury goods, as a medical remedy for digestive problems and in burial ceremonies presumably to comfort the dead as they pass on to the next world.  For the Mayan's caca was more than just a food, it was a delicacy approaching divinity.
