Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's crust. Many gemstones, such as amethyst, rose quartz, and citrine, are quartz varieties that have trace amounts of other elements within their crystalline structure. These trace elements produce the variety of colors that we see in quartz.  The color of smoky quartz (brownish-black) can be attributed to natural radiation reacting with trace aluminum within the crystalline structure. This particular crushed smoky quartz is from Brazil and is grade A material. Our medium material is considered to be sand sized (very coarse sand to fine sand), ranging between 2 millimeters to 0.25 millimeters. Please see the corresponding sediment size chart.  Mineral Properties Mohs’s Hardness: 7 Specific Gravity (g/cm3): 2.64 - 2.69 Luster: Vitreous Color: Brownish-Black Origin:  Brazil This product is not man-made, mixed with resin, dyed, or stabilized.
