Strategies For Teaching Online & In Person Simultaneously
Description Challenge - Teaching in a hybrid learning environment (online & in person simultaneously) Seemingly overnight, COVID-19 dramatically altered the way colleges and universities operate. But even before the pandemic hit, the hybrid format was gaining in popularity as faculty and other educators found that a "both/and" approach to teaching was superior to an "either/or" style when it comes to classroom management. Enough time has now passed that 'best practices' in facilitating a hybrid format are beginning to emerge. Navigating a classroom where some students are in the room, and some are on the screen can be tricky. But it can be done; this webinar will show you how. Key Takeaway Participants will be provided with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to manage a hybrid classroom where some students are physically present in the room, and others are attending virtually via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or a similar platform. This interactive webinar will emphasize evidence-based best practices for supporting the needs of college students participating in online learning and in-person classes. Overview "A hybrid learning course takes the 'best of both worlds by combining the best of face-to-face learning with the best of online learning. Technology may better facilitate some types of learning, and class time can be shortened and/or used for activities that better lend themselves to face-to-face interaction. An integrated course model accommodates a wider range of learning styles by offering flexibility, more options for learning, and integration of learning activities that lead to deeper learning." - Cornell UniversityCOVID-19 forced colleges and universities to drastically change the way they do business. One of the primary concerns has been making sure the classroom experience continues to be as engaging as possible given the inevitable constraints imposed by the pandemic. Join your colleagues from across the country as we explore best practices in engaging students in a hybrid classroom where some students attend in-person and some are attending online. We'll talk about the 'dos and don'ts' of effective teaching when the audience is divided by format. We'll explore successful strategies and techniques that can be employed to make sure everyone feels a part of the learning experience. We will discuss concrete recommendations for how this can be done in a variety of higher education environments. Equal emphasis will be placed on helping both institutions and individual students achieve their mutually-complementary goals and objectives. We can turn a challenge into an advantage during these extraordinary times – and we can come through this stronger and more responsive to the needs of our students - but we have to be purposeful in our actions and fully committed to putting the needs of the students at the center of everything we do. Objectives Reflect on the changes to classroom environments precipitated/enhanced by the pandemic. Define hybrid learning and its various integrated components. Explore evidence-based best practices for teaching in a hybrid learning environment. Investigate what kinds of learning strategies work best in synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. Examine online learning tools such as discussion boards and breakout rooms. Discuss the types of activities that are unique to each type of learning environment. Demonstrate the kinds of learning activities that can be migrated between learning environments. Dissect case studies from the 'real world' in which the hybrid model has been used successfully.
