10th Cavalry Regt.

This cap honors the proud legacy of the men of the 10th Cavalry regt. A unit whose story which really begins during our American Civil War when 175,000 Americans of African descent volunteer to join the Union Army and participate in the fight for their own freedom. The incredible record of service and sacrifice of the USCT units persuade Congress to authorize the raising of 6 more colored regiments for service in the post war west, 4 of Infantry and then the 9th and the 10th Cavalry. If it is Custer's 7th that is sent to deal with the Sioux and Cheyenne, it is the 10th who is sent to deal with the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache in our Southwest. Distinguishing themselves to their enemy on many occasions, the Indians gave them their proud nickname, probably because their hair resembled to the Indian the shaggy hair of the North American Bison. That nickname and that legacy would spark an instant and iconic recognition in the annals of our American western experience. They were simply known as...
