Blacktail Mountain Watermelon
(Citrullus lanatus); an OSSI-pledged variety; Minimum 25 seeds Finally a watermelon that matures for me! A cute ice-box sized watermelon, Blacktail Mountain was developed by breeder and preservationist Glenn Drowns for short season gardens of the north. Ready at the 75-day mark, each glossy dark green melon delivers an iconic summer treat in its orangy-red sweet flesh. Medium sprawling vines average 6 fruits. I grow it as a groundcover but Blacktail Mountain would trellis well. And yes, I know they aren't technically a staple crop, but I posit watermelon are super morale boosters, especially on a hot summer's day - AND! they make tasty pickles! Though we haven't tried it, reportedly the late slightly unripe melons will finish after picking and store up to two months in a cool, dry location. Something to keep in mind if frost is imminent.
