Large elegant painted terracotta figure of court attendant, dating to the Tang dynasty 618-907 AD. The body is covered in a long, loose garment. The fleshly face is nicely molded, with the original pink pigment on the face still present. Figure wears a headdress. His right hand held towards chest is pieced for the insertion of a wooden lamp or scroll that has been since perished. This is a particular well preserved example of a Tang figure, originating from a prominent private collection. Renowned for their mastery in capturing the inner spirit of their subjects, the figural artist of ancient Tang Dynasty are rightly lauded for their ability to convey a strong sense of character in their creations.
