Overview NFPA 101 and UL guidelines stipulate 90 minutes as the minimum allotted time for a most buildings to vacate after a power failure occurs. Emergency lights and exit signs must provide at least 90 minutes of emergency illumination when running of their internal battery. However many facilities require a much longer running emergency lighting setup, including nursing homes where tenants may be sleeping during an emergency, requiring a superintendent or fire official to check each room for missing occupants.
