Artist: Kawase Hasui 巴水 (1883-1957)Title: Mount Fuji from Yuimachi at Suruga 駿河由比町 Series: Scenes from the Tokaido 東海道風景選集 Date: 1934 昭和九年二月 Yui Town, Suruga. Mount Fuji’s snow-covered peak rises above an orange horizon into a gentle mist, the famous contours of its cone softly visible. It seems to be sunset, the landscape in autumn-like colors, but as the treetop at left is bare it is perhaps winter, as the work is dated the second month. A woman descends the path towards a small cluster of villagers; our vantage is from a rather steep decline, the buildings are set in a terraced fashion. We might be on the Tokaido Road itself, perhaps descending towards the foot of Satta Pass. Yui-cho was a town in Ihara District; in 2008 it was merged into Shimizu-ku into the the city of Shizuoka and the Ihara District was dissolved. Yui is still a post town on the Tokaido Road, and this station was most famously depicted by Hiroshige in his Hoeido Tokaido series.  With the prewar Watanabe “D” seal,
