Papier collé cover by Howard Willard. PM (later called A-D for art director) was America's leading trade journal exhibiting ambitious work and Modern sensibilities between 1934–42. Featuring the influential, (16) page printed insert designed by the 34-year-old Hungarian-born émigré, György Kepes. Introduction by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Director, School of Design, Chicago with an idealistic essay by Kepes titled “The task of visual adverting,” where he advocates for a new language of visual advertising: “If advertising art will really succeed in the most economical way, it must concentrate its efforts on these new visual fundamentals of our age.” Illustrated with work by Kepes from 1938–40, some full-page: photograms, cover designs, a typographical exercise, magazine covers, book covers and advertisements. Additional articles unrelated to Kepes are included. A very good, still bright journal with a dark toned spine and some light skinning to the front and back covers, mostly along the edges. Interior pages are still bright and well preserved.
