A-D: An Intimate Journal for Art Directors, Production Managers, and their Associates, Vol. VII, No. 3, Feb–March, 1941. A-D Publishing Co., New York. 5.375 x 7.875, pp. 69 plus trade advertising. Front and back covers designed by Paul Rand. A-D (earlier called PM for production managers) was America's leading graphic design trade journal featuring ambitious work and Modern sensibilities between 1934–42. Featuring an early (16) page, printed insert designed by Paul Rand with his own layout and typographic handling. An excellent text authored by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (Oct. 16, 1940) introduces the insert. “Among these young Americans it seems to me that Paul Rand is one of the best and most capable representatives. He is a painter, lecturer, industrial designer, advertising artist who draws his knowledge and creativeness from the resouces of this country. He is an idealist and a realist, using the language of the poet and the business man. He thinks in terms of need and function. He is able to analyze his problems but his fantasy is boundless.” Illustrated with work by Rand including: editorial pages, furniture, magazine covers, brochures, photograms, and posters. Additional articles unrelated to Rand are included. A good, original vintage journal, lightly rubbed with moderate soiling and handling, mostly to the covers including some pencil and ink. Interior pages are generally clean with a light bend to the cover corner and interior pages. Condition noted and price adjusted.
