A rounded, deciduous large shrub or small tree up to 20 ft tall. This gratifying western native becomes covered with a profusion of flowers in spring. A soft, rose-purple haze enlivens the landscape from February to April. Very heat, drought, and clay tolerant, it's not for the coast; it needs distinct seasons to flower. Flowers emerge before the leaves and young pods are purportedly edible. Rounded heart-shaped leaves turn from a light green in spring, to medium green in summer, to a rich red in autumn. Butterflies will alight! Mature size: 10-20 ft tall x 10-15 ft wide Minimum temperature: -20° F
