Cercis canadensis Carolina Sweetheart™ NCCC1, Eastern Redbud

A profusion of pink pea-like flowers bloom on bare branches before a dramatic showing of foliage. Leaves emerge purple, then fade to the blushed, variegated foliage in white, green and hot pink! for which this varietal is prized. Flowers turn to pea-like seed pods in the fall. This is a rounded understory tree that is often multi-stemmed. Appreciates some summer water and afternoon shade in hot climates. Needs a winter chill to set flowers. It was developed as a collaboration between NC State University and Star Roses and Plants Nursery. Mature size: 15-20 ft T x 20 ft W in 10 years Minimum temperature: -20° F
