Artist StatementA major theme in the novel is that enlightenment can only be achieved through the full examination of human experience. Siddhartha recrosses his path along the river through his life's journey over and over again. The mandala in Buddhism is both a symbol of the universe, and a spiritual tool for meditation and learning. It was adopted and popularized by Carl Jung, who was a friend of Hesse's, and it was thought Jung that Hesse became interested in Buddhist philosophy. — Christopher English
