The pull of coast and cove has been after me all my life, and ocean has rolled on in my mind’s eye as a metaphor for much that is beautiful, some things that are frightening, and a handful of things that are maybe both—liberation, for example; the freedom to choose our own way according to our reason and moral imagination. Also, death: the gulf that opens suddenly between us and the loved one;
