An archival premium Quality art Print of Martha Washington, the Athenaeum Portrait by Gilbert Stuart for sale by Brandywine General Store. This early American artist painted this portrait of the first First Lady in 1796 with the original size being 30 by 25 inches. It is now located at the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Stuart painted two portraits, this one of Martha and one of the President. He purposefully left these two paintings unfinished because he liked the one of the President better than any other he had painted. Since it was left unfinished, he used that painting as a model for many more portraits through the years so the President was not required to set each time a portrait was required. Gilbert Stuart had painted a very good likeness of President Washington in 1795.
