This incredible artwork by naturalist and artist, John James Audubon, forms part of his major work, a book titled 'The Birds of America'. It contains 435 life-size watercolors of birds in North America reproduced from hand-engraved plates. It was first published between 1827 and 1838. Herons are long-legged, freshwater and coastal birds, and also include smaller species like egrets and bitterns. There are around 64 species of herons in the world, with 11 types found in North America. Many bird species suffer losses due to the same threats like nest disturbance, predators and limited availability of food. Herons and waders rely specifically on wet environments for survival, so coastal development or exposure to pesticides and toxins leaking into waterways pose very real dangers to the health of these birds.
