Here is a 1940's vintage electrical Free Air Temperature Indicator, used to measure outside air from -20 to +120 degrees F. Has been seen on 1940's DC-3, but also on the US Army Air Corps' UC-43 Beech Staggerwing (see photo from flight manual dated 1944). Measures 3.25 inches diameter and 3 inches deep.
