Andres Quandelacy (d): Apple Coral, Mountain Lion
Kwan-da-lacy The apple coral, with its deep, earthy red tones mottled by hints of black and dark orange, gives the feline an intense, grounded presence—reminiscent of blood, stone, and sun-warmed earth. Polished to a satin sheen, the coral’s natural texture remains subtly visible, adding to the raw beauty of the piece. The mountain lion is carved in a poised, fluid stance—muscles tensed in a low, prowling motion or perhaps standing still, alert and focused. The carving captures its sleek strength and quiet authority, a predator deeply in tune with its environment. Set into its face are turquoise eyes, bright and electric. The contrast of cool turquoise against the rich coral gives the mountain lion a soul-stirring intensity—eyes that seem to watch, guard, or guide. These eyes elevate the carving from a mere animal form to a symbol of spiritual vision and purpose. Running along the side of the mountain lion’s body is a turquoise inlaid heart line—a sacred symbol in many Native tradition
