Jean-Léon Gérôme (French) ca. 1884 Gérôme credited his early studies at the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris for the success of his animal paintings. The gentle treatment and understated drawing seen in this painting reflect the style he developed in the 1880s. It is believed to have been painted around 1884, during which time Gérôme also exhibited another nocturnal scene featuring tigers titled "Night in the Desert" at the Paris Salon (now housed at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh).
