Antique Agra Rug 12'0'' x 16'6'' circa 1880

The deep red field shows an up-to-date version of the classical 16th century jungle and animal carpet design with a central medallion from which emerge four dragons, palmettes, some enclosing animals, snaky cloud bands, animal combats and various ramping animals, along with some vigorous vinery. Cream border with broad strap-work meander connecting reversing oval palmettes, also in the classical manner. Well woven, urban-style. Cotton foundation. As new condition.
