When Peter Gabriel left the comforting group identity of Genesis after almost ten years, it might've been expected that he would want to re-assert his individuality. However, titling his first three albums PETER GABRIEL was bound to confuse at least a few fans into buying the same record twice (not a bad marketing strategy when you think about it). PETER GABRIEL the (second) album allowed Peter Gabriel (the singer) to stretch a bit more than his Bob Ezrin-produced debut. Under the watchful eye of producer/fellow art-rock refugee Robert Fripp, Gabriel stretched his musical palette from the raucous "On The Air" to the fragile "Flotsam and Jetsam" to the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink "D.I.Y." Not as stark as PETER GABRIEL (III) or as funked-up as SECURITY, PETER GABRIEL (II) shows Gabriel ably charting the idiosyncratic nonformula that he follows to this day.
