Slavček "Črno" Red 2022

Another offering from the Vodopivec family of Slavček farm, whose vineyards — though surrounded by forested hills — still enjoy gentle breezes from the Adriatic less than 50 kilometers away. The “Črno” is a blend of mostly international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera, and Merlot, which grow side by side with indigenous grapes on the family’s six-hectare property. There’s also a touch of Refošk, which adds a hint of smoke to this easygoing red. Otherwise, this wine is all about juice, juice, juice. Notes of blueberry, black raspberry, and pine resin are braced by light, powdery tannins and good acidity, making it an effortless pairing for weeknight dinners. Roast chicken, shepherd’s pie, meatloaf, mushroom-based pastas…all would be delicious with this easygoing red.-Kate Masters
