Bonavita Rosato Terre Siciliane 2023
DOC Faro is one of Sicily's oldest, but it's frequently overshadowed by the nearby Etna DOC that sits above it. If you walked northeast down the slopes of Mt. Etna toward the coast, you'd find yourself on Faro's sandy, sea-level soil. Bonavita is one of only a handful of producers remaining in the region and farms organically, cultivating only the indigenous grapes Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera. Yields are extremely low and the family-run estate only produces around 7,000 bottles a year. The vines are grown on steep hills overlooking the strait of Messina and Calabrian coast. Their Rosato is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio with a small amount of Nocera added for tannic structure. It has juicy notes of cherries, strawberries, and salted orange rind on the nose and palate, accompanied by more herbaceous notes of sage. With its zippy acidity and ripe, powdery tannins, it would pair equally well with pork, meat-based pasta dishes, or salty fish like anchovies
