Note: Item pictured is sample coin from around same time period and not the actual sale item. The Morgan dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. It was the first standard silver dollar minted since production of the previous design, the Seated Liberty dollar, ceased due to the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, which also ended the free coining of silver. The coin is named after its designer, United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. The obverse depicts a profile portrait representing Liberty, while the reverse depicts an eagle with wings outstretched.   Several varieties of that year were minted in Carson City - some featuring the 1879 reverse design and others earlier - 1878.  In this variety, the eagle now sports a rounder and more convex breast making it look more natural. Also, unlike the reverse of the previous variety where the top arrow feather is parallel to the other arrows held in the eagle's claw, in this one the top arrow feather
