150 SEEDS. Beta vulgaris. 52 days. Annual. Heirloom. Zones 3 - 9. Does well in poor soils and produces ruby red, uniform, globe-shaped roots with short green tops. Mildly sweet in flavor. Hardy and even thrives in shade. Great for canning and pickles well. Directly sow seeds 1/2" deep outdoors in moist, well-worked soil after the last frost date has passed. Seeds can be soaked for 24 hours to aid germination. Germinates in 5 - 17 days. Thin seedlings to stand 3 - 4" apart when 1 - 2" tall with at least 12" between rows. Full sun to shade. Keep well-watered throughout the growing season, especially during dry spells. Harvest baby greens or roots at 1" in diameter for baby beets. Harvest roots around 3" in diameter for mature beets.
