T3D-029-000 Third rail sub-station
This third rail substation was one of twenty three constructed in the late 1950s as part of the first phase of the Kent Coast Electrification. The Southern Region of British Railways built these substations at roughly 3.5 mile intervals along the routes. Power was supplied directly from the Grid at 33kV or 66kV A.C and fed through railway-owned oil-filled cables to these sub-stations. The sub-stations converted this to 750 volts D.C. The sub-stations were constructed to supply and control current to the third rail. Sub-stations had cabling from the building to the third rail. This was often using concrete cable troughs (see our T3D-007 range of Concrete Cable Troughs / Trunking).
